I have been considering a career change these past few months... after working with occupational therapists the last few years, I have become interested in this work. While helping my daughter research this as a career, I realized that I only need two years at UBC to get my Masters degree in occupational therapy. There is a real shortage of them in our area. Hmmm.
I love working with kids with reading problems- I have to say it's amazingly rewarding- and I love my work with SelfDesign... but every once in awhile I wonder what it would be like to work in another field not education-related! I get overwhelmed sometimes by the enormity of the systemic problem and at how difficult it is to effect real change.
Maybe I could to do both...

I think the systemic problem is an outgrowth of our mis-understanding of learning and our negligence in stewarding the health of our learning (www.implicity.org). I recommend you find your way to both. Your passion is surely needed in both.

I think a combination of both careers would suit me very well, but for now I will take my father's advice; "when in doubt do nothing and the answer will become obvious". The trick is to do nothing really well and to recognize the answer when it appears! I will ponder awhile longer.
I couldn't agree more with you that there is neglect in stewarding the health of our learning. I think perhaps it stemmed from a feeling of helplessness and then moved into apathy, but it has now sunk to abject neglect.
It feels like the education system is asleep, or in some sort of stupor- and we need it to wake up and energize itself... one of my professors during my Masters program stated that school systems are not designed to change....
Well doesn't that bode well for our future generations??
By the way- I really like what you wrote about kids and Nintendo... that they seem to be processing the future... very cool.
